The Elmhurst neighborhood, located in Providence's northwest quadrant, is bounded by the neighborhoods of Wanskuck to the east and northeast, Smith Hill to the east, Valley to the south, Mount Pleasant to the west and northwest, and the town of North Providence to the north. The major street boundaries that delineate Elmhurst include Admiral Street to the northeast, Smith Street and Academy Avenue to the west, and Chalkstone Avenue to the south. Elmhurst became a residential area during the 20th century after being mostly farmland for earlier centuries. With the implementation of streetcars in the latter part of the 19th century, Elmhurst began to develop and became home to European immigrants in the early 1900s. Today it is the location of Roger Williams Hospital, LaSalle Academy and Providence College.
