Located in the northeast part of Providence's East Side, the Blackstone neighborhood developed as a middle and upper-income neighborhood recognized for the unique and refined character of its homes. Blackstone Boulevard, completed in 1894, runs through the neighborhood from south to north from Angell and Waterman Streets to Hope Street. Notable landmarks include Swan Point Cemetery, where science fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft is buried, and Butler Hospital, one of the longest-running psychiatric hospitals in the country. Blackstone lies between the banks of the Seekonk and Moshassuck River Valley, lending itself to picturesque views.
